What is yoga?

Yoga is the practice of linking breath and movement until the two stop being separate things. In a class you move through postures that build strength, mobility and balance, held together by a steady rhythm of breathing — and it is the breathing, more than the shapes, that does the quiet work. Some days that feels physical. Some days it feels like the first properly still half hour you have had all week. Both are the practice.

Our yoga classes on the Gold Coast are taught in a light-filled studio in Ormeau, with mats spaced so you are never crowded and a teacher who watches the room rather than performing at the front of it. Postures are offered with options — a block, a bent knee, a version closer to the floor — so one class can hold people at genuinely different levels without singling anyone out. You will never be pushed into a shape your body is not ready for.

What you notice over a few weeks is usually less dramatic than the marketing suggests, and more useful. Hips and shoulders loosen. Standing postures get steadier. Sleep improves. The habit of noticing your own breath starts turning up off the mat — in traffic, in a difficult conversation, at two in the morning. That is the part people stay for, long after the flexibility stops being the point.

If you have never done yoga before, this is a reasonable place to start: nobody is watching you, and the teacher will tell you what to do. If you have practised for years and want somewhere unhurried and unpretentious, it is that too. There is no dress code, no expectation that you can already touch your toes, and no one keeping score. Come as you are and take what you need from the hour.

Is yoga right for you?

  • Complete beginners

You have never been on a mat and you are quietly worried about being the worst one in the room. You will not be — and the class is taught so that it does not matter.

  • Coming back to movement

After an injury, a pregnancy, or a long stretch of nothing. Tell your teacher before class and you will be given options that work with your body rather than around it.

  • Experienced movers

You already have a practice and you want somewhere consistent to keep it honest. Deeper variations are always there if you want them.

Before you come — the practical bits

Is yoga suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Our classes are taught with options at every stage, so a beginner and a long-time practitioner can be side by side in the same room and both get what they came for. Let your teacher know it is your first class and they will keep an eye on you.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear something comfortable you can move and stretch in — yoga is practised in bare feet, so you will not need shoes. Bring a water bottle, and a mat and towel if you have ones you love. If you are not sure what is provided at the studio, just ask when you book.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes — classes are booked online ahead of time so we know who is coming and can set the room up for the class size. You can see what is on and reserve your spot from our timetable.

How is yoga different from Pilates?

Yoga works through held and flowing postures with the breath leading, and tends to build mobility, balance and a calmer nervous system. Pilates works through small, controlled, repeated movements and tends to build deep core strength and stability. Plenty of our members do both, and they complement each other well.

What if I have an injury or I am pregnant?

Tell your teacher before the class starts. They will give you alternatives for anything that is not appropriate and check in with you during the class. If you have a recent injury or a complicated pregnancy, have a word with your doctor or physio first as well.

Where exactly is the studio?

We are in Ormeau, on the northern Gold Coast, an easy drive from Pimpama, Coomera and Upper Coomera. Full directions and parking details are on our contact page.
